What were your thoughts on deciding to pursue an MSW degree?

My intent in going to graduate school was to become a therapist. I originally thought that I had to get a psychology degree in order to make this happen. However, after speaking with my supervisor at a local mental health agency I found out that a graduate degree in social work would be just as viable an option as a clinical psychology degree for one who wanted to practice psychotherapy. Considering the fact that the majority of mental health counseling is done by clinical social workers, and that one of the premiere clinical programs is right here in Utah, I chose to pursue an MSW degree from BYU.

Why did you choose BYU’s social work program?

Firstly, I chose this program because of the strong clinical emphasis. I wanted to become a therapist and this was the best program in the area for that purpose. Secondly, I needed a program that fit my financial and family needs, which this program did. I found it to be quite a bargain for the quality of instruction and clinical experience that I gained. Thirdly, I chose this program because of my desire to connect my faith and my professional practice. The field of psychotherapy has its roots in philosophy and I wanted exposure to theories and approaches in psychotherapy that also included the teachings of Jesus Christ. This I found at BYU.
