Field Practicum Requirements
A minimum of 480 hours of social service agency experience is necessary for graduation. This usually requires a minimum of 16 hours per week or 240 hours each, for two consecutive semesters. Students must remain in field practicum a minimum of eight (8) uninterrupted months.
Field practicum credit is given through students' enrollment in the weekly integrative seminar course (Soc W496R) which is the on-campus/concurrent class where field experiences are discussed and curriculum integration is accomplished. You must continue to attend during the entire semester you are enrolled, even though your field agency placement hours may be completed prior to the end of the semester or term.
Formal application for placement must be made prior to registration for the courses.
Prerequisites are:
- Soc W 312, 313, 362, 364, 365, 366, and 464
- Psych 342
- Acceptance to the major and attendance at BSW Orientation.
- Attendance at the Fieldwork Orientation Meeting.
Other requirements are:
- Soc W 462 (Social Service Practice 3) must be taken concurrently with Soc W 496R (Field Practicum)
- Prior to attending the BSW Field Orientation, you must print and read BSW Field Manual. This manual contains the field practicum policy, procedures and the necessary evaluation forms.
- Professional practice insurance is required for all hours you are participating the field practicum. This coverage is paid by the School of Social Work for the terms you are enrolled in the integrative seminar.
- Evaluation forms must be submitted to the instructor of your integrative field seminar course before a grade can be given for the class. A midterm evaluation is due at the midpoint of your first semester and the final evaluation is due at the end of each 240 clock hours of fieldwork.
- You can participate in the field practicum placements only while you are enrolled in Social Work 496R. It is not possible to complete field placement hours any time prior to enrolling in the class.
